Meet the Author
Deborah Cornin
Deb lives in Boston, MA with her husband, Errol, and their two sons. She is a Doll Maker, Home Maker, and fulfills the supportive role of a Preacher’s wife. Following a tragic assault in 1989, Deb sunk into depression, leaving the house only to go to work and to church. She prayed to God every day for help and God answered her prayers with the discovery of a unique gift that got her moving again: She had the talent for making dollhouses depicting scenes of African American life. “Like you need water, I needed to do this,” she says. “God gave me certain words and He said to me, ‘I’m gonna show you how to move from dysfunctional to functional, from self-destruction to reconstruction, from grief to relief.’ And that’s what this represents.” Deb makes black dolls because they reflect her life experiences, including the schools and churches she attended and her family, the main source of inspiration for each of the scenes in her dollhouses. She cherishes her memories of growing up in the '60s, especially Christmas. Although they couldn'tafford a lot of material things, they were happy because they had each other. Deb uses photographs of her cherished memories depicted in her dollhouses to illustrate her children's books. Her Christmas story, Christmas without Santa: The Reason for the Season is curently available and there are several more stories to come. Deb's Book
Christmas Without Santa: The Reason for the Season Based on the questions of Deb's own son, this story is about a little boy who is struggling with the meaning of Christmas. Is it about Santa Claus as his friends at school seem to think, or is it about Jesus Christ as his parents, grandparents, and church members all say? This beautifully illustrated picture book sets the record straight. Preview ISBN: 978-0-9820897-7-4 Recommended Ages: 4 - 8 Price: $12.95.
